There is a crease running down the left hand side of the spine. The spine ends are bumped and nicked with tears of about 1/4" on the top spine corners. The unclipped dustwrapper had some shelf wear with light soiling and a faint water stain near the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with tick marks in pencil beside several of the titles on the contents page together with ball-point asterisk marks beside others with a note that these are 'particularly horrible ones'. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends. The book is bound in the original green boards with black titling on the spine. It contains 31 stories, including 'Ghost Stories of an Antiquary', 'More Ghost Stories', 'A Thin Ghost and Others', and 'A Warning to the Curious' together with four new stories. James’s framework for the ghost story was set down in an introduction he wrote for Ghosts and Marvels (1924), edited by Vere H. This collection was first published in 1931. Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was an English author and medievalist scholar, but he is best remembered for his ghost stories, which some consider among the best in the genre.
